Choro is Rio's instrumental music from the 1870s on (Pixinguinha, Jacob do Bandolim), in 2/4 with the melody on flute, clarinet or bandolim and the accompaniment on cavaquinho, pandeiro and the seven-string guitar. The guitar's job is the baixaria: a walking, often chromatic bass line in the low strings that connects the chords, with the chord itself stabbed on the and of each beat. Here it walks C - A7 - Dm - G7 with approach tones under each change. The pandeiro plays the basic samba/choro hand pattern per beat: thumb on the beat (kick), fingertips on the jingles (hat), heel-slap on the and (rim). Keep the chord stabs short and the bass notes long; the two lines should sound like two players.
