Guaguancó is the urban rumba of Havana and Matanzas, played on three congas, claves and voices; when a salsa band plays a guaguancó, piano and bass take over the tumbador and tres-dos melody. Everything hangs on the rumba clave: the 3-side's last stroke is on the and-of-4, not on 4, so the piano's anticipation of the next chord lands there too. The right hand chatters on the 3-side (1, and-of-2, and-of-3, and-of-4) and relaxes on the 2-side (2, 3). The bass is a tumbao, the congas sketch the tumbador's open tones on the and-of-3 and and-of-4. Compare with the son montuno: same gestures, one eighth note later at the key moment.
