Pello el Afrokán's carnival rhythm from 1963 Havana, built on conga comparsa drumming; in New York Eddie Palmieri and Steve Berrios turned it into a drum-kit groove that Latin jazz still uses. It sits on the rumba clave, usually 2-3, and its signature is the bell: a cáscara-like line whose 3-side lands on the and-of-4 with the clave. The kick doubles the bass tumbao (and-of-2, 4), and the low conga answers the bell on the and-of-3 and and-of-4. Over the top the piano can play an ordinary guajeo; the groove is in the percussion. Hear it next to the mambo bell: same tempo, same guajeo, but the rumba clave makes the whole thing lean later.
